Cloud Computing 101: Key Steps For Getting Started, Understanding The Concepts, And Applying Them To Your Organization

Cloud computing is the concept of leveraging IT assets over the Internet in order to provide more scalable, cost effective, and adaptable services to an organization. However, the concepts behind cloud computing reach much further. Indeed, cloud computing is an evolution of thinking and rethinking around how you create and deploy information systems, and effects the way we approach computing, both on-premise and off. So, how does one get started? What are the basic concepts of cloud computing, and how do I apply them within my enterprise or agency?

You start by understanding. Understanding cloud computing, which this workshop will address, but also understanding your own IT requirements which will indicate where and how cloud computing could be a fit. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of cloud computing, covering the general concepts behind the cloud, as well as common deployment patterns, such as private, public, hybrid, and community clouds. We'll also provide you with the steps you should take when moving to cloud computing, including understanding your own requirements, defining your architecture, selecting cloud computing deployment models, selecting cloud computing providers or technology, and selecting the right services, processes, applications, and data to relocate to cloud computing platforms.

Topics covered include:
  1. Introduction to cloud computing:
       a. Characteristics of cloud computing
       b. Deployment models
            i. Private
            ii. Public
            iii. Hybrid
            iv. Community
       c. Public cloud examples
            i. Google app engine
            ii. AWS
            iii. Azure
       d. Private cloud example
       e. Cloud computing and government
  2. Business case for cloud computing:
       a. Cloud computing ROI
       b. Creating a business case
       c. Cost metrics

       e. Bringing governance to the clouds
       f. Testing from Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to the clouds
       g. Defining candidate data, services, and processes for the clouds
       h. Picking cloud computing platforms
  6. Conclusions

WORKSHOP LEADER: David S. Linthicum, Chief Technology Officer with the Bick Group and an internationally recognized industry expert and thought leader, is the author/co-author of 13 books on computing, including the best selling Enterprise Application Integration (Addison Wesley). Dave keynotes at many leading technology conferences on cloud computing, SOA, Web 2.0, and enterprise architecture, and has appeared on a number of TV and radio shows as a computing expert. He is a blogger for InfoWorld, Intelligent Enterprise, and eBizq.net, covering SOA and enterprise computing topics. Cloud Computing 102: Analyzing Which Cloud Deployment Option Is Right For Your Organization And Moving Forward With A Plan

Now that you know what cloud computing is -- how do you move forward with an action plan? In this interactive workshop, you will learn:
  • The key characteristics of the different cloud deployment options (public, private, hybrid) and how to determine which is right for your organization
  • The key services you need to have in place to ensure success in deploying, managing, and scaling an application in a cloud environment
  • How to perform an application portfolio assessment to determine which of your applications are best suited for a cloud environment

This session will highlight a cloud services taxonomy, presented to help you understand the role of key cloud services like application management and payment models for your organization. Finally, this session will offer an application portfolio analysis framework presentation. This analysis framework is designed to enable IT organizations in assessing which applications are most appropriate for cloud computing.

WORKSHOP LEADER: Bernard Golden is called a "cloud guru." He is CEO of HyperStratus, a Silicon Valley cloud consulting firm that helps its clients plan, design, and implement cloud initiatives. HyperStratus clients include the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, HelloWallet, Sun Microsytems, and Hewlett-Packard. Bernard is the Cloud Computing Advisor for CIO Magazine. His widely-read CIO.com blog on cloud computing has been called "brilliant and incisive." His blog's influence was recognized when it was named a "Top 25 Cloud Computing Blog" by CloudTP. He is the author or co-author of three books on virtualization and cloud computing, including Virtualization for Dummies, the most popular book on the subject ever published. Bernard is a popular and engaging presenter, speaking throughout the world at conferences like CloudWorld, Cloud Connect, Structure, and EDUCAUSE.
