Securing A Cloud Environment: Overcoming The Challenges

Cloud computing can be a cost-effective, efficient way to backup data and network. But can it also benefit you in a security environment? Learn what is involved in a cloud environment, and how to truly make it work for your security needs.

In this workshop, Govplace will address how to effectively use cloud computing, and address the pros and cons of implementation by covering the following key issues and steps:
  • 3 delivery methods and deployment models of a cloud security environment
  • Benefits and risk factors of using cloud computing for backup and storage
  • IT security habits
  • Setting expectations of cloud security
  • The policy landscape of a cloud environment
  • How do you manage risk?

WORKSHOP LEADER: Dan Smith manages the Program Management and Systems Engineering functions of Govplace's Federal Professional Services organization which has a focus on Performance-Based Contracting, Enterprise Program Management, Security & Information Assurance, and COTS Infrastructure Integration. Mr. Smith has been designing and integrating enterprise IT solutions exclusively for the public sector for more than 10 years. He has experience with a broad range of enterprise IT applications, technologies, and integration approaches. He holds extensive expertise around Infrastructure as a Service, data center server and storage architectures, enterprise IT consolidation, and application-specific IT infrastructures. He has supported numerous clients in consolidation efforts, which have resulted in significant cost savings to the government and delivered increased operational efficiencies. Mr. Smith also holds a wide variety of architect-level IT certifications and qualifications with many leading IT developers and manufacturers.

AFTERNOON POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP D
Optimizing The Cloud To Empower Your Message Archive

Each of the hundred billion emails, IMs and documents created every day need to be preserved for some period of time. Yet, IT managers who struggle to manage overflowing in-boxes and maxed-out email servers are about to be hit with another data explosion.

Enterprises are implementing new collaboration systems (Sharepoint, GDocs, ZoHo) for document sharing, which means employees will have more options beyond email to collaborate internally with each other and externally with customers, vendors, friends and family. These new capabilities create growing “shards of content” or data silos in the enterprise that need to be captured and archived for compliance, e-discovery, storage management and universal information governance best practices. So, how can this be done?

In this session, you will learn how to:
  • Move your organization toward the most cost-effective and reliable solution of message archiving
  • Implement a centralized archiving service powered by cloud-scale infrastructure as a service
  • Determine where your organization will host and process your data: on premise in their own data center, in the cloud, or a hybrid IT mixture

Cloud computing can be harnessed in a safe, secure, reliable way to become a virtual extension of an enterprise’s own data center, which allows the IT decision maker to save money and time by leveraging the cloud's “pay as you go” model for on-demand virtual CPU and hosted storage with 99.999% resiliency.

Finally, just as mainframes gave way to mini-computers and mini-computers to the personal computer, cloud computing promises to usher in a new wave of computing that will change the way your organization works. Moving your email archive to the cloud is a great way to join the cloud computing revolution.

WORKSHOP LEADER: Greg Arnette is the Founder and CTO of Sonian. For more than 15 years, Greg has helped leading corporations develop and manage their messaging systems. Since starting up Sonian in 2006, Greg has been responsible for product vision, technical innovation, and engineering leadership for the Sonian cloud-powered email archiving and e-discovery service. Prior to starting Sonian, Greg was founder and CTO for IntelliReach Corporation, a pioneer in integrated messaging management products and services, which was purchased by Infocrossing in 2006. Before that, he created messaging products and services for AlertWare, which was acquired by Netpro. Greg has a BA/BS from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
