AFTERNOON POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP D
Thinking Big: Understanding And Preparing For The Future Of National-Scale Multimodal Biometric Systems - - Including Growing Data Sizes And User Expectations
There is an approaching tidal wave of biometric data just over the horizon. The use of biometrics is growing. Accurate identity management is becoming increasingly more important, and all over the world people are turning to biometrics to meet this need.
National-Scale multimodal systems represent the largest systems currently being considered, and the hopes for these systems are ambitious. Imagine the problems that will have to be addressed when a biometric database contains a significant percentage of a nation’s population, and potentially all of the foreign visitors who cross their border. Tomorrow’s biometric systems will have to cope with enormous data sizes and enormous expectations of biometric users. This workshop will be an informal and interactive exploration of ways to prepare for the future and to "Think Big" about biometrics.
Specifically, this interactive workshop will focus on key issues and strategies for preparing your own biometric system for growing data and user requirements, including:
- Defining "big"
- Ensuring flexibility in large scale systems
- Overcoming the problems with scaling
- Tuning large systems with small tuning data sets
- Understanding identification vs. credentialing systems
- Addressing special considerations for national scale biometric systems
- Applying lessons learned in domestic and foreign deployment to your own biometric systems
- Preparing for new frontiers
WORKSHOP LEADER: Mark Cavanagh, Lockheed Martin Biometric Engineer, has over 10 years experience in the biometrics industry, starting as a member of the IAFIS algorithm development team. He has worked on several biometric systems and is currently working in Lockheed Martin’s biometric and identity technology research and development program.
