Biometrics 101:
Understanding Biometric Technology And Its Implementation

This workshop will prepare you for the rest of the conference by providing fundamentals of biometrics, biometric modalities, devices and scanners, concepts and terminology. It will demystify enrolment, authentication, verification, and identification. Additionally, you will be presented with a comparison of capabilities, advantages, disadvantages, and vulnerabilities of various biometric systems.

We will review fundamental enabling technologies, standards, biometrics system architecture, testing/evaluating performance, acceptability, and privacy considerations; including:

  • Current state of the art and new developments
  • Major biometric technologies
  • Multimodal biometrics - including the fusion of:
       - Fingerprint
       - Iris recognition
       - Face recognition
  • Major horizontal biometric applications
  • Large-scale integration and project methodology
  • Case studies of major deployments
  • Testing and certification of systems
  • Biometrics spoofing
  • Biometric standards
  • Privacy and biometrics

You will also have the opportunity to network with fellow attendees and obtain an insider perspective on the biometric industry.

WORKSHOP LEADER: Thomas Neudenberger, COO or realtime North America Inc., creators of bioLock, the first and only certified biometric technology deeply integrated into SAP ERP. Mr. Neudenberger has been involved in international business development for 23 years. In his previous position at One Vision he was originally responsible for managing partner channels in all of Europe. He then started the headquarters for the Americas and managed the sales channels in North and South America. Mr. Neudenberger has been a speaker at many industry events such as SAP related conferences, The Florida Space Authority, The ASIS (American Society for Industrial Security), The Silicon Trust Program, The Symposium on Information Systems Risk, Security and Assurance and many more.

Implementing Biometrics:
A Step-By-Step Process To Ensure Project Success

During this workshop, you will learn best practices for biometric system implementation to help you avoid common pitfalls and ensure success. You will leave with a step-by-step checklist that can be tailored to your own biometric project.

Specifically, through examples of good and bad implementations,
you will learn a process for:
  • Understanding and defining key requirements - such as business, technology and legal requirements
  • Matching the right technology to the application
  • Determining unique biometric considerations and risks
  • Addressing system integration considerations
  • Ensuring best practices for enrollment, interoperability, data privacy and security
  • Considering human factors and the physical environment

WORKSHOP LEADER: Walter Hamilton is a Senior Consultant with Identification Technology Partners, a consulting firm in the identity management field. Prior to joining IDTP in 2006, he served as Vice President and General Manager, Biometric Solutions for Saflink Corporation after completing a distinguished 30-year career with Unisys Corporation. Mr. Hamilton is a recognized industry authority and subject matter expert on biometric technology. He is serving a sixth term as Chairman and President of the International Biometrics & Identification Association, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit trade association that represents the collective interests of the biometrics and identity management technology industry. He is a frequent speaker at conferences and symposiums related to biometrics and identity management. He also serves as Chairman of The Biometric Foundation, a non-profit research and education organization.
